I have known Ruth for three years now. We worked together professionally but we quickly became friends. Ruth is a kind and very compassionate person who goes above and beyond to help others. She cares deeply about people and has a profound understanding of how trauma can affect every aspect of a person’s life. She has the ability to look beyond a person’s current issues to see the underlying contributing factors, and uses both her trauma-informed training and unwavering compassion and determination to help them heal.
I feel so incredibly fortunate to have met Ruth and anyone who knows her or who has the opportunity to work with her, is truly Blessed.

I met Ruthie Barbosa in the summer of 1986, in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx, where I grew up. Ruthie was the Director to Seneca Center Youth Group. The door to the program opened in the middle of the Hunts Point neighborhood where I lived and became a beacon of light and hope for me. Ruthie, I feel was one of my answered prayers and an angel sent from above.
Hunts Point was riddle with crime, drugs, prostitution, and the loss to see pass what was in front of you. I felt I had no future. How could I? I lost so many childhood friends, my baby brother was heading down a bad path, but the worse pain for me was to see my beautiful, caring, and warrior of a mother, succumb to drugs and become a biproduct of the environment I lived in. I thought there was no hope after this; that is until I met Ruthie.
Ruthie was not just the Director at Seneca Center; she was a mother figure. She guarded me and provided safety within the small walls of her program. Her program became a safe haven for many the children within the Hunts Point community. She taught me I have a voice and how to use it. Ruthie demonstrated what community is supposed to be about and the ripple effects of what advocacy can create and do for a human soul. Ruthie Barbosa is a force to be reckoned with. She mirrored what I wanted to be like. She ignited my spirit and instilled the power to look within myself. My future is bright, because of the help this beautiful person provided.
I didn’t graduate from high school, but I obtained my GED. I am a mother to three beautiful daughters and two grandsons. I live for my family. I went to college and major in Human Services and want to become a social worker. I look forward to seeing this dream to fruition. I currently work as a case manager in a family shelter helping, advocating, and mirroring the hope and the force that was demonstrated to me. Thank you, Ruthie, because what you imparted in my soul was never forgotten. You are loved beyond measured.

Working in the social service sector in any capacity takes more than a degree stating you know the information in the text book. It takes compassion, cultural competence, patience, critical thinking, advocacy and so many other things that paper (degree) doesn’t guarantee. These qualities come from within and these qualities are just a view Ms. Ruth Barbosa has ingrained in to her very spirit.
I was lucky to have started my career with Ruthie as my supervisor for four years. In our field trauma is the gaping wound causing individuals to react and behave a certain way. The trauma has to be “healed” before the behaviors can change. Ruthie has taught me to always come from a place of “care and concern “. Every case and client have their own story. Through Ruthies compassion and critical thinking skill she, has always been great at putting clients on their road to healing. Now when handing cases I always use the Ruthie lens of “care and concern” to better understand individuals.
Personally I had my own trauma which have been pushed to the from working in this sector. Luckily, I had an amazing, supportive supervisor who set me on my own healing path which in turn made me more effective and efficient at my job.
Ruthie has been a safe place for me and given the chance she can be a safe place for you

Ruthie's guidance was extremely helpful to me in my career and personal development. She effectively provided me with helpful tools that made me feel inspired, educated, and ready to conquer the field as a social worker. Ruthie is very compassionate about helping others and I highly recommend her services!
